If you enjoy thrills, horror, and humor during a visit to Europe or the U.K., you should definitely stop by their Dungeons. In this group of attractions, visitors learn about the dark history of the city they are visiting.

In London, you’ll step back into the world of Jack the Ripper, and in Edinburgh, you’ll experience the era of the plague or cholera. You’ll walk (or sail) through dark, eerie settings populated by real creatures and discover how gruesome murderers and events shaped history. Or how the villains, in turn, were tortured and killed.

So this isn't for the faint of heart, but unfortunately, it really happened…

Rollercoaster Tycoon 3

Back in time, to 2004.

November was the big month; that’s when game designer Chris Sawyer released the long-awaited third version of Rollercoaster Tycoon. The avid amusement park builder was eagerly awaiting this new simulation game.

And rightly so, because for the first time in RCT history, Sawyer introduced 3D animations, “night views,” and the unique ability to ride the roller coasters you built yourself. Following the original and the second installment—which didn’t differ much from one another—RCT 3 became something of an outlier in the series.

Tijdens de Halloween-periode halen vele pretparken hun pompoenen boven. Zal ik jullie er eens wat over vertellen?

Squash is a very ancient crop. It was already being cultivated in the Americas as early as 7000 B.C. The fruit was introduced to Europe in the 16th century. It was already being grown by Native American tribes in the U.S.

In the U.S., large pumpkins are carved into jack-o'-lanterns for Halloween. This requires a sharp knife because the skin of the fruit is quite tough. Additionally, undersized pumpkins are used for pumpkin tossing.The genus Cucurbita comprises a dozen species. The following species are of importance in Europe:

– Giant pumpkin (
) … can grow up to 1 meter in circumference and weigh as much as 70 kg. The vines can reach a length of 10 meters. The fruit is spherical with flattened top and bottom.

– Zucchini
The name comes from France; in Italian it is called "zucchetti," and in America it is known as "squash." It is a non-vining squash with cucumber-like fruits.

– Patisson
The fruits are about 15–20 cm in size, white, yellow, or light green in color, and saucer-shaped with a lobed edge. They are used as decorative fruits, for example in floral arrangements.

– Spaghetti squash
… has large, elongated, pale yellow fruits. Only the young fruits have a decent flavor. The cooked flesh resembles spaghetti.

– Butternut squash (
) … remains smaller and is the only variety with orange-red flesh.

– Acorn squash
… is small and heart-shaped, with a deep green or orange color, or a mix of both. They are typically sliced and roasted or roasted whole.

Haunted Houses

haunted houseElke Halloween-fan kent wel de ‘Haunted Houses’. Het idee is eenvoudig: grote binnen- of buitenruimtes worden rond 31 oktober speciaal ingericht als tijdelijke spookhuizen. Het betreft meestal walkthroughs, waarbij de bezoeker wandelt tussen pompoenen, skeletten, spinnen, monsters,… kortom: alles wat Halloween aangaat. De HH’s willen mensen bang maken en ze tegelijkertijd aan het lachen brengen. Hiervoor worden alle mogelijke middelen ingezet. Gruwelscènes worden aangevuld met animatronics, en hier zijn de voorbeelden legio: skeletten die uit hun doodskist komen, een landloper die met zijn gaslamp zwaait, een immens monster dat zijn tanden toont, enzovoort.

Sommige ‘darkwalks’ huren echte acteurs in die – vermomd als weerzinwekkende creaturen – iedereen aan het schrikken moeten brengen.

Wist je dat er speciale beurzen worden georganiseerd om ‘props’ en ‘scenery’ (lees: de items die je in en rond deze haunted houses terugvindt) te kunnen kopen? Je begrijpt het al: het is een big business op zichzelf.

Om te kunnen griezelen, moet je niet altijd naar een haunted house gaan. Een darkride van Sneeuwwitje biedt vaak ook al de nodige spanning…

Hours of Operation

Als je naar een pretpark wilt, moet je rekening houden met de openingstijden. De meeste outdoor (lees: openlucht-) pretparken zijn niet het hele jaar door open, maar enkel tijdens het pretparkseizoen. Dat seizoen start veelal in april en eindigt in veelal november.

De meeste parken zijn gesloten tijdens de winter. Enerzijds omdat het dan koud is en het voor de bezoeker minder aangenaam is om in een openluchtattractie (zoals een rollercoaster of watersplash) te vertoeven. Anderzijds wordt de sluitingsperiode gebruikt om het park een schoonmaakbeurt te geven (dus om attracties te herstellen/renoveren, om er nieuwe te bouwen, om paden te kuisen, enzovoort)

Toch zijn er pretparken die het hele jaar open blijven: de indoor (overdekte) parken, die geen last hebben van slecht weer. Een voorbeeld is Plopsa Indoor in Hasselt.

Sommige outdoor-pretparken stellen hun deuren uitzonderlijk open tijdens winterdagen en/of tijdens de kerstvakantie. Ze lokken volk met reclamecampagnes die inspelen op de winter, waarbij het park volledig in die sfeer wordt gedompeld. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn Winter-Efteling of Kerst in Bellewaerde.

Naast de ‘openingstijden’ zijn er natuurlijk nog de ‘wachttijden‘, en die zijn helaas onvermijdelijk…

Pepper's Ghost

In the 19th century, John Henry Pepper (1821–1900) devised a technique for making transparent ghosts appear in a haunted house. The technique was named “Pepper’s Ghost” (pronounced “pepperghost”), after its inventor. The principle is as convincing as it is simple.

On the left, you see what the viewer sees: a semi-transparent blue ghost playing a church organ. The spectre on the right (vxf2xf2r the black background) is not visible to the viewer. What the viewer sees is nothing more than a reflection of the spectre on the right on a transparent glass wall— a blue line has been drawn around it in the image.

This wall is set at a slight angle so that it can catch the reflection of the light. If you stand in front of your window at home and shine a spotlight on your face, you’ll see the (semi-transparent) reflection of your face in the window.

In the image above, the viewer sees a combination of that reflected image—so you’re actually looking at a piece of glass—and a real church organ.

When you apply this principle in a dark setting and combine it with spooky music, the effect is very convincing. In practice, it’s being used more than ever. Just think of The Phantom Manor at the Disney parks, the Haunted Castle at Efteling, and so on.

Want to watch a video showing the atmosphere of an amusement park or an attraction online? If you type the full and correct name of the park or attraction into YouTube, you’re sure to find a video of it!

If you type in the word "onride" or "offride" along with the name of the ride, you can watch recorded videos as if you were experiencing the ride yourself.

The internet is full of videos and photos of amusement parks you may have never heard of—or may never visit in your lifetime.

Of course, nothing beats a real amusement park. The experience of a roller coaster or a dark ride is best when you’re actually on it.

RCT: bordspel

Board Game_rct_1Wist je dat er van het pc-spel ‘Rollercoaster Tycoon’ ooit een bordspel werd uitgebracht? Het bestaat onder meer uit een speelbord, kartonnen attracties en verschillende kaarten. Met de kaarten kan je bijvoorbeeld attracties bouwen, mecaniciens inzetten of items kopen en verkopen.Doel van het spel is om zoveel mogelijk gasten in je park te krijgen over twee speljaren.

Het spel heeft het copyright van Chris Sawyer, uitvinder van RCT-reeks. Het kwam uit in 2002, het jaar waarin ook de pc-game RCT 2 een release kreeg.

Dit spel is anno 2026 niet meer in de handel, maar misschien kan je – als je het écht zou willen hebben – nog wel ergens een tweedehands exemplaar terugvinden…?

Final Destination 3

For fairground fans, the movie *Final Destination 3* opens with a scene that’s a real treat. The film shows footage of an evening fair featuring all kinds of rides, such as a swing ride, a carousel, a freefall ride, and more.

Anyone familiar with the FD films knows that Pietje De Dood is hot on the heels of all the actors. Eventually, the fairground scene reaches a climax when a few teenagers decide to get on a massive, red roller coaster.

A girl has a vision in which the roller coaster car derails, killing everyone on board. Director James Wong then depicts the fatal final ride in great detail. Not for the faint of heart, then, and definitely not recommended if you’re planning to visit an amusement park the next day…
